The Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) convened its 209th Regular Board Meeting today, where members took up policy discussions centered on rehabilitation reforms, emerging legislative developments, and regional and youth engagement initiatives.
During the meeting, the Board discussed proposed enhancements to rehabilitation systems, including the framework for jail-based rehabilitation mechanisms. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that individuals undergoing treatment receive appropriate care in secure and properly managed environments consistent with health standards. Recognizing the need for careful planning and coordination, the Board agreed to subject the proposal to further technical study through a dedicated Technical Working Group composed of concerned agencies. The discussion also highlighted the importance of strengthening reintegration components, including livelihood support, and ensuring coordination with partners such as the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to support effective local implementation.
The Board likewise deliberated on ongoing legislative proposals related to medical cannabis. Members underscored that any potential policy direction must undergo comprehensive study and be guided by scientific evidence, regulatory safeguards, and public health considerations. The DDB will undertake the necessary policy work in coordination with relevant agencies to ensure that any recommendations remain aligned with national drug control objectives.
The meeting also included updates on the Philippines’ continuing Chairship of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters (AMMD), as well as National Youth Commission’s (NYC) upcoming youth-led initiatives supporting preventive education and advocacy under the Philippine Anti-Illegal Drugs Strategy (PADS).
The Board continues its focused work in strengthening rehabilitation systems, addressing complex policy questions with diligence, and maintaining inter-agency alignment as national and regional drug priorities continue to evolve.
