In every home, the lessons children carry into the world begin with the guidance they receive from their parents. Recognizing the vital role of families in shaping young lives, the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), through its trained facilitators, conducted the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) for advocates and community partners in Teresa, Rizal.
The initiative reflects the principle embodied in Section 41 of Republic Act No. 9165, which recognizes the family as the basic unit of Filipino society and underscores the responsibility of parents to educate family members on the dangers of illegal drugs and guide those who may be vulnerable to drug abuse.
Through STEP, parents and community advocates examined how family relationships influence children’s social and psychological development. The discussions explored how children grow across different stages of life, helping parents better understand the changing needs, emotions, and behavior of their children.
A central theme of the training was communication within the family. When parents create spaces where children feel heard and understood, trust deepens and young people are encouraged to share concerns and seek guidance when confronted with challenges.
The sessions also emphasized the importance of nurturing self-esteem and emotional resilience, key protective factors that help children navigate peer pressure and difficult choices. Practical approaches to discipline were likewise discussed, including the use of natural and logical consequences that promote accountability while preserving respect within the family.
Beyond parenting skills, the conversations reinforced a broader message: families are among the most important partners in preventing drug abuse. When parents are equipped with the right knowledge, tools, and support, they help raise young people who are confident, responsible, and resilient.
