Young leaders thrive when they are given tools to guide their peers. Equipping them with life skills empowers them to stand resilient against challenges and become champions of drug abuse prevention.
In partnership with the Department of Education Schools Division Office (DepEd SDO) Pampanga, the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), launched the Training of Trainers on Life Skills Enhancement for Drug Abuse Prevention Education. The program is designed to cultivate youth leaders who wil champion safer and healthier lifestyles within their schools and communities.
The program draws from the Drug Abuse Prevention Education framework under Republic Act No. 9165 and supports the implementation of the Barkada Kontra Droga program. These mechanisms place young people at the center of prevention efforts, recognizing their capacity to influence attitudes and behaviors among their peers.
Facilitated by the DDB’s Preventive Education, Training, and Information Division, secondary learners serving as BKD officers underwent structured training to strengthen their roles as peer educators. As part of a core group of trainers, they are expected to lead life skills sessions that support informed decision-making and responsible behavior.
The sessions focused on communication, decision-making, and resilience. with learners gaining confidence through activities that build self-esteem and leadership. Using an activity-based approach, participants engaged in experiential learning, small group discussions, short lectures, role-playing, and simulation exercises.
Workshops alternated between breakout groups and plenary sessions, balancing peer interaction with collective learning. Role-play explored real-life challenges such as peer pressure and assertive communication, while simulations promoted teamwork and collaborative problem-solving. Peer coaching reinforced leadership skills, fostering mentorship and trust among participants.
Through this approach, preventive education is sustained within the school setting and extended through peer-led initiatives, allowing its impact to grow across communities.
